Try as she might, Lexie couldn’t stop thinking about the hug and how it was the best hug she’d had in a long time. Most of the hugs she’d received over the past year had been sympathy hugs, but this one was different. This one was more. The only time she managed to stop thinking about it was at work, because they were still in the midst of cold and flu season, and the office was busy.

Lexie walked up to the front desk and placed a patient file into the return basket. The desk was decorated with pink and red cutout hearts for Valentine’s Day. April had dressed for the occasion in a white sweater with red hearts all over it.

“Are you going out with Justin tonight?” Lexie asked.

April smiled. “Actually, we’re having dinner at his place. He’s cooking. What about you? Are you doing anything?”

“Riley and Evan are stopping by with Trixie,” she said, using the name Riley had finally settled on for the kitten.

“Evan, huh?” April said, eyeing her intently.

“It’s not like that.”

“I know, but it’s sweet he chose to spend the holiday with you.”

“And Riley,” Lexie pointed out.

Of course, it wasn’t as easy for him because of Riley. Maybe Evan hadn’t even realized it was Valentine’s Day when he suggested it. Last night, she’d stayed up late making heart-shaped sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles. She’d told herself it was mostly for Riley, but she knew Evan liked them too.

After work, Lexie and April walked out together. “Have fun tonight,” Lexie said.

“You too. Give Evan a hug for me.”

Lexie had told April about the hug, mostly because her friend had dragged it out of her. After the birthday party, April had noticed she was acting strange, and Lexie had finally revealed the reason. “That was a onetime thing. He was just thanking me for helping with the cat.”

“Well, tonight, he might hug you as a thank-you for making him dinner.”

Lexie chuckled. “You’re turning into a hopeless romantic.”

“It’s Justin’s fault. He’s such a great guy, I can’t help it.”

Evan’s a great guy too, Lexie thought as she drove away. He was caring, considerate, and unselfish, almost to a fault. He was an excellent father and friend, but lately, she’d been thinking of him as more. She imagined his good qualities would make him an excellent lover, too. She shook her head to clear the wayward thought. Stupid Valentine’s Day! It’s all your fault.

At home, she changed out of her scrubs and into a red sweater and skinny jeans. She added a silver heart necklace and matching earrings. Finally, she brushed her hair and swiped on some rosy blush and lip gloss. If she’d been
